Serving Forgotten Children
Children of Mercy (COM) began in 2018 with a heartbreaking mission: to rescue children in Dar es Salaam who were surviving by scavenging for scraps in garbage dumps. Driven by the empty promises of a "better life" in the big city, these vulnerable souls instead found hunger, exploitation, and the terrifying reality of sleeping on cold roads where many faced harassment or rape. While we successfully reunited 30 children with their families in the early years, the sheer volume of suffering made it clear that a temporary fix was not enough. These children are not just statistics; they are precious lives in desperate need of food, clothing, and a safe place where they are no longer forgotten or ignored.
As the demand for care grew, we realized that sustainable change required a physical sanctuary. By 2024, our vision shifted toward providing a long-term home where children could be nurtured and, whenever possible, placed in loving Christian families. In 2025, this dream became a reality when World Harvest Ministry of Canada established the House of Mercy. This newly opened facility will be a home to 16 young girls, providing them with the shelter and protection they were once denied on the streets. It is more than just a building; it is a foundation of hope where these girls can heal from their trauma and begin to envision a future filled with dignity rather than fear.
We are profoundly grateful for the support of our ministry partners, such as Good News International, whose generosity provided a essential clean water well for our facility. However, the daily operation of a full-time home brings ongoing financial challenges that require a community of support. To keep this vital ministry running, we have immediate needs for basic necessities including nutritious food, school uniforms, clothing, and funds to cover hydro and utility bills. Each donation directly impacts a child's quality of life, ensuring they have the energy to learn and the supplies they need to attend school alongside their peers, breaking the cycle of poverty and lack of opportunity.
While the House of Mercy is a significant milestone, our work is still in its infancy.
The number of homeless children in Tanzania continues to rise due to family breakdowns and extreme poverty, leaving thousands more waiting for a hand to reach out to them. Our heart for the future is to expand this sanctuary by establishing a second home specifically for boys, who remain highly vulnerable to the dangers of the street.
